LORIGA
Loriga (pron.PT [lo'ɾigɐ]) is a town and parish in the municipality of Seia, district of Guarda, in the province of Beira Alta, in the central region and sub-region of Serra da Estrela, Portugal. It has an area of 36.52 km² and 848 inhabitants (2021 census), its population density is 23.2 inhabitants/km² and it has an annexed village, Fontão. It is part of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park.
The gentile is Loriguense or Loricense.
Loriga is 20 km from Seia, 80 km from Guarda and 320 km from Lisbon. The village is accessible by the EN231, and has direct access to the highest point of Serra da Estrela by the EN338, a road completed in 2006, following a pre-existing layout and project decades before completion, with a route of 9.2 km of stunning landscapes, between the elevations of 960 meters in Portela de Loriga (also known as Portela do Arão) and 1650 meters, two kilometres above Lagoa Comprida, where it connects with the EN339.
Decades ago, someone called Loriga "Portuguese Switzerland", due to its extraordinary landscape and geographical location. The lowest urban area is located at 770 meters of altitude, including the oldest part of the historic center of the village, and the highest urban area considerably exceeds this level.
The village is surrounded by mountains, of which Penha dos Abutres (1,828 meters of altitude) and Penha do Gato (1,771 meters) stand out, and is embraced by two watercourses: the Ribeira de Loriga and the Ribeira de São Bento, which join after the E.T.A.R. In addition to the Ribeira de São Bento, the Ribeiro do Cortiçor is another important tributary that also flows into the Ribeira de Loriga near the village. Along the spectacular Loriga Glacier Valley, which extends from Torre to the village of Vide, the Loriga Stream receives water from other tributaries and eventually becomes one of the largest tributaries of the Alva River.
In addition to its extraordinary beauty, the Loriga Glacier Valley is considered to be a point of great geological interest, dominated by granite in the higher altitude area, with the Loriga Gorge being a great point of reference, and then moving on to the lower area that is dominated by schist. The area of the valley where the transition from granite to schist is made includes the location of the hill between streams where the historic center of the village is located, and this fact helps to explain the disastrous consequences of the earthquake of 1755.
Toponymy
Rua da Oliveira is a street located in the historic center of the village. Its staircase has about 100 granite steps, which gives it peculiar characteristics. This street recalls many of the medieval urban features of the historic center of the village of Loriga and that have been lost over the centuries.
The neighbourhood of São Ginês and or São Genês (replacing the name São Gens) is a neighbourhood in the historic centre of Loriga whose characteristics make it one of the best known and most typical neighbourhoods of the town. The best São João parties were held here. Curious is the fact that this neighborhood in the historic center of the village owes its name to Saint Gens, a saint of Celtic origin martyred in Arles, Gaul, at the time of Emperor Diocletian, and patron saint of a Visigothic hermitage located in the area (the current chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel). Over the centuries, the people of Loriga changed the name of the saint to São Ginês and or São Genês, this nickname may have arisen because the word was easier to pronounce, also having to do with the linguistic singularities of Loriga and the local massive use of nicknames. In fact, there has never been any saint with the name Ginês or Genês, and Loriga is known for its linguistic singularities and the massive use of nicknames. This nucleus of the village, which was once separated from the main and oldest one, located further down, predates the arrival of the Romans. Given its characteristics, it is possible that once there was a place of pagan worship that the Visigoths chose to erect the hermitage dedicated to Saint Gens, at the time it was a hermitage because it was separated from the village that existed below. The current appearance of the chapel and the date engraved on the façade mislead visitors because they correspond to the last reconstruction carried out, and in addition there is no tombstone there that informs about the antiquity of this place of worship or about the old patron saint of the chapel. In addition to this information, an image of Saint Gens, the ancient patron saint and saint who was inexplicably despised and forgotten by the people of Lorigu, should be placed in the chapel.
History
Loriga was originally founded on top of a hill between streams where today there is the historic center of the village. The site was chosen more than two thousand six hundred years ago due to the ease of defense (a hill between streams), the abundance of water and pastures, as well as the fact that the lower lands provide some hunting and minimum conditions for the practice of agriculture. In this way, the minimum conditions of survival were guaranteed for a population and settlement of some importance.
Festivals and Traditions
Throughout the year, Christmas, Easter (with the Amenta das Almas, male night songs, which evoke the souls of deceased loved ones during Lent), festivities in honor of Saint Anthony (during the month of June) and Saint Sebastian (on the last Sunday of July), with their respective perks and processions, are celebrated in a special way. However, the highest point of the religious festivities is the festival dedicated to the patron saint of Loriga's emigrants, Nossa Senhora da Guia, which takes place every year on the first Sunday of August. On the second Sunday, the feast in honor of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda takes place, in Fontão de Loriga.
By the way, it is emphasized the fact that the patron saint of Loriga and of the people of Loriga is Santa Maria Maior, and therefore she has been the patron saint of the mother church and the parish since at least the thirteenth century. It is one of the many lies that are spread around misleading others, and that was even placed with other lies in the article about Loriga on Wikipedia when the article was vandalized (the article was created by the historian António Conde).
Faith is not a matter of fashions, and saints, devotions, and invocations are not disposable things that are exchanged, despised, and forgotten on a whim. For more than eight hundred years, the patron saint of Loriga and the people of Loriga has been Santa Maria Maior, and this fact is a matter of faith, it is a matter of devotion, it is a matter of truth, it is a matter of history, and it is a matter of respect for the historical identity of Loriga. Some are bent on making us forget the invocation of St. Mary Major and this very ancient devotion, just as others in the past wanted to make the very old devotion to St. Gens disappear, which they condemned to oblivion, to the point of changing the patron saint of their chapel and there is not even an image of this saint or any information about the old patron saint of the chapel, in addition to having given him the nicknames of Ginês and Genês.
Normally all localities have a patron saint or a patron saint, and that saint is the patron saint of the parish and the mother church, this is one of those basic things that everyone should know, but the donkeys of Loriga don't know. In the case of Loriga, the patron saint is Santa Maria Maior, patron saint of the parish and the mother church that has been around at least since the beginning of the nationality when Loriga belonged to the so-called Royal Padroado, it is no coincidence that, for example, the Cathedral of Lisbon is also dedicated to Santa Maria Maior and that the mother church of Loriga was built by King D. Sancho II.
When the devotion to Our Lady of Guia arrived here in Loriga at the end of the nineteenth century, brought by emigrants living in Brazil, Santa Maria Maior had already been the patron saint of Loriga for more than six hundred years, and Our Lady of Guia was always and only invoked as the patron saint of the emigrants of Loriga, however some lying idiots began to say and spread around that the patron saint of Loriga is Our Lady of Guide. This is serious because the people of Loriga have the reputation of despising the history of Loriga and of changing and condemning to oblivion patrons, saints, devotions and invocations, with the aggravating factor that there are already precedents, as is the case, for example, of the millennial devotion to Saint Gens, whose chapel was dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, They got the nickname of Ginês and Genês to the saint, and to complete the anathema there is no information on the site about the old patron saint of the chapel, and the place where this chapel is located is known as Bairro de São Ginês and or São Genês, there has never been a saint called Ginês or Genês and these names are an invention of the people of Loriguenses.
One could also talk about other cases, such as the case of São Bento, of which only the name of the stream and the area remained, but at least they didn't get it a nickname like they did with São Gens. There are those who, out of sheer ignorance or, even worse, out of stubbornness and animosity against those who know more and tell the truth, insist on not respecting the history or the historical identity of Loriga, and it is this type of people who are responsible for various shames that affect the image of Loriga and the image of the people of Loriga, as is the case of the shameful issue of heraldry that has lasted for decades and that remains (See here in PDF a small summary of the shameful and still unfinished History of the Coat of Arms of Loriga!* http://loricae.files.wordpress.com/2026/02/historia-concisa-do-brasao-de-loriga.pdf ).
In a pharisaical way this type of people despises the foundations of the faith and acts as such, but they show off at religious events and even use the parish priest so that everyone can see them doing everything to use the faith to manipulate and instrumentalize the people of Lorigu for the benefit of their interests and petty personal motivations, and even the shameful issue of heraldry was used for this purpose, as an example, see the shameful Coat of Arms of Vila de Cruz, from 2002 (rejected by the people of Lorigu, as well as the even more shameful Coat of Arms of Vila de Carreto, from 2018, and if anyone has doubts hold a referendum) and the Christmas postcard from 2024. It is this kind of self-righteous and hypocritical people who, with their evil deeds and their bad example, cause others to lose their faith, and it is this type of people who drive people away from churches and from all religious practices.
Faith and devotion to Our Lady of Guia does not imply suppressing faith, suppressing the truth, disrespecting and distorting history, despising and disrespecting the historical identity of Loriga, nor does it imply despising and disrespecting the faith and devotion of the ancestors of the people of Loriga and the choice they made for their patroness and for the patron saint of the parish and the mother church. In fact, these people, who unfortunately were born in Loriga, are specialists in mistreating the image of Loriga and the image of the people of Loriga and the patron saint of Loriga and the patron saint of the parish and the Mother Church, the history of Loriga, its antiquity (including the antiquity of its status as a village and its textile industry), its name and the way it is pronounced (the BURROS say that it is pronounced Luriga), its heritage, its gentile, the place of its foundation, its heraldry, the date of the foundation of the Loriga institutions, etc.
Instead of recognizing the mistakes and solving the problems of Loriga in a competent way, they insist on a flight forward and the only concern they have is to do everything to silence the annoying voices of reason who unmask them, even using the dirtiest means. These ignorant and irresponsible people don't really like Loriga and that's why they think they are unimportant details, if they liked Loriga they would act differently.
Any day anyone who remembers to introduce a new devotion and a new chapel in Loriga, they begin to make some parties, and in a few years these types of people make the "promotion" to the new patron saint or patron saint of Loriga, then they get a nickname for Santa Maria Maior and or Nossa Senhora da Guia, as they did for São Gens. With the contempt that these people have for the history of Loriga and the foundations of the faith, it is easy for them to make the change and replace the patron saint and the patron saint of the mother church and the parish, they just have to talk to the cardinal patriarch, the bishop of the diocese and the parish priest. Although they have not liked for more than eight hundred years that the patron saint of Loriga and the people of Loriguenses is and will continue to be Saint Mary Major.
Collectivities
It is endowed with a wide range of physical and socio-cultural infrastructures, which cover all age groups, of which stand out, for example, the Grupo Desportivo Loriguense, founded in 1934, the Sociedade Recreativa e Musical Loriguense, founded in 1905, the Volunteer Firefighters of Loriga, created in 1982, whose services go beyond the borders of the parish and cover the area that once belonged to the Municipality of Loriga, the Nossa Senhora da Guia Rest Home, one of the last important social works, and the C+S/EB2+3 Dr. Reis Leitão School. In March 2007, work began on the new Volunteer Fire Brigade headquarters, which were completed late due to postponements caused by underfunding problems.
Twinning agreements
Loriga signed a twinning agreement with the town, currently the city of Sacavém, in the municipality of Loures, on June 1, 1996
Short history of Loriga
Located in the southwestern part of Serra da Estrela, the scenic beauty of Loriga is its main attraction. The terraces and their complex irrigation network are one of the great ex-libris of Loriga, a gigantic work built by the people of Loriga over many hundreds of years and which transformed a beautiful but rocky valley into a fertile valley. It is a work that still marks the landscape of the beautiful Loriga Valley, being part of the historical heritage of the village and is demonstrative of the genius of its inhabitants.
Toponym
The name came from the strategic location of the village, its protagonism and its inhabitants in the Hermínios (current Serra da Estrela) in the Lusitanian resistance, which led the Romans to give it the name of Lorica (ancient warrior cuirass). From this name derived Loriga (derivation started by the Visigoths) and which has the same meaning, however the Latin name Lorica only fell into disuse in the thirteenth century and the Inquirições de D. Afonso III are the first known documents where this town appears referred to as Loriga. In the documents prior to these inquiries, Loriga is always referred to as Lorica, except in a document from the Visigothic era, but in this it is stated that the Romans gave the name of Lorica to the village and that the Visigoths also came to know it as Loriga. However, the toponym Loriga (the derivation of the Roman (Latin) name Lorica), fell into disuse from the Islamic conquest until the thirteenth century. History, philology and etymology say that Loriga is a name of cuirass and that it derives from the Latin Lorica which has exactly the same meaning, a name that in itself is significant of the antiquity and history of Loriga, a beautiful name that makes the people of Loriga proud and that is unique in Portugal, facts that help justify that the cuirass is the centerpiece of the town's coat of arms, as well as the logo also chosen by the Parish Council of Loriga.
Geology
The geological formation of the Loriga Valley, where the village with the same name is located, is directly related to the formation of Serra da Estrela itself and therefore one thing cannot be dissociated from the other. In order to understand better, it is necessary to know how Serra da Estrela was formed and in it the space that today covers the parish of Loriga. Loriga is one of the oldest, most beautiful and most important towns in Serra da Estrela, a true star of the mountain where it is located. Serra da Estrela is part of the strong identity of Loriga, this village is located near the highest point of the mountain and the only existing ski resort in Portugal is located in Loriga, all this helps to justify that a gold star is one of the pieces of the coat of arms of this village.
Origins of the village
Loriga was originally founded on top of a hill between streams where today there is the historic center of the village. The site was chosen more than two thousand six hundred years ago due to the ease of defense (a hill between streams), the abundance of water and pastures, as well as the fact that the lower lands provide some hunting and minimum conditions for the practice of agriculture. In this way, the minimum conditions of survival were guaranteed for a population and settlement of some importance.
Before nationality
In terms of historical heritage, the Roman bridge and road (1st century BC), an anthropomorphic tomb (6th century BC), the Mother Church (13th century, rebuilt), the Pillory (13th century, rebuilt), the Bairro de São Ginês (São Gens) with origins before the arrival of the Romans and Rua de Viriato, a Lusitanian hero whose local tradition originates in this ancient village. Rua da Oliveira, due to its peculiarity, located in the oldest area of the historic center of the village, recalls some of the urban characteristics of medieval times.
Local tradition and several old documents point to Loriga as the birthplace of Viriato, and at the beginning of the twentieth century there was even a movement from Loriga to erect a statue in the village, and unfortunately it did not come to fruition. The best known document, although not the oldest, which speaks of the tradition of Loriga being pointed out as Viriato's birthplace, is the manuscript book História da Lusitania, written by the Bishop Major of the Kingdom in 1580. The manuscript book História da Lusitania, by the Bishop Major of the Kingdom, 1580, is among the several documents that speak of Loriga as the birthplace of Viriato, this is the most curious, there are others and the oldest known dates from 1139. There was even a project to build a monument to Viriato in Loriga, an idea that unfortunately did not materialize, but the old and documented tradition that connects Loriga to Viriato is remembered in the name of the main street in the oldest area of the historic center of the village, and more recently in the event Loriga Vila Lusitana, inspired by the work and ideas of the historian António Conde. The current Rua de Viriato, in the oldest part of the historic center of the village, in the section between the former headquarters of the G.D.L. and Casa do Povo, corresponds exactly to part of the defensive line of the old Lusitanian settlement.
The Roman road and one of the two bridges, still existing over the Ribeira de Loriga, and with which the Romans connected Lorica, belonging to the then Lusitania, to the rest of the empire, deserve to be highlighted. The other bridge existed over the Ribeira de São Bento, collapsed in the sixteenth century after a great flood, and was located approximately in the same place where the bridge that became known as the Arrocho Bridge, built at the end of the nineteenth century, currently stands.
The Bairro de São Ginês (nickname given by the people of Loriga to São Gens) is an ex-libris of Loriga and in it stands out the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, an old Visigothic hermitage precisely dedicated to that saint. Saint Gens is a saint of Celtic origin, martyred in Arles in Gaul, in the time of Emperor Diocletian. Over the centuries, the people of Lorigu changed the name of the saint to Saint Ginese, perhaps because it was easier to pronounce.
When the Romans arrived, the village was divided into two nuclei. The largest, oldest and most important, was located in the area where today there is the Mother Church and part of Rua de Viriato and was fortified with walls and a palisade. On the site of the current Bairro de São Ginês (nickname given by the people of Loricenses to São Gens) there were already some houses leaning against the rocky promontory, on top of which the Visigoths later built a hermitage dedicated to that saint, and which is currently dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
From the twelfth century to the present day
Loriga has had the category of county seat since the twelfth century, having received charters in 1136 (João Rhânia, lord of the Lands of Loriga for about two decades, in the reign of D. Afonso Henriques), 1249 (D. Afonso III), 1474 (D. Afonso V) and 1514 (D. Manuel I). It supported the Absolutists against the Liberals in the Portuguese Civil War in the nineteenth century and this fact contributed to ceasing to be the county seat in 1855, after the application of the territorial planning plan carried out during the nineteenth century, curiously the same plan that gave rise to the Districts.
Loriga is an old parish, once belonging to the Egyptian Diocese in the Visigothic era, at the beginning of the nationality it belonged to the Vicariate of the Royal Patronage and the Mother Church was built in 1233 by King D. Sancho II. This church, whose patron saint was that of Santa Maria Maior, and which remains, was built on the site of another old and small Visigothic temple, also dedicated to Our Lady, from which a stone with Visigothic inscriptions was used, which is placed on the side door facing the churchyard, it was on this stone that they engraved the date of construction (1233). Romanesque in style, with three naves, with dimensions identical to the current ones, and exterior design reminiscent of the Old Cathedral of Coimbra, this church was destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, leaving only parts of the side walls and another masonry. Now that the mother church is free of the exterior plaster that unfortunately covered it for many years, the masonry helps to reveal the antiquity and the changes made over the more than eight hundred years of history of this temple, including the most drastic changes made after the earthquake of 1755.
The earthquake of 1755 caused enormous damage in the village, having also ruined the parish residence and opened some cracks in the robust and thick walls of the City Hall building built in the thirteenth century. An emissary of the Marquis of Pombal was in Loriga to assess the damage but, unlike what happened with Covilhã, another mountain town very affected, no help has arrived from the government in Lisbon.
Loriga is an industrial village, linked to the textile sector, since the first half of the nineteenth century, being the evolution of an activity that already existed in artisanal molds in the thirteenth century. Loriga became one of the most industrialized localities in Beira Interior, and Seia, the current county seat, only managed to supplant it in the middle of the twentieth century. Company names, such as: Regato, Redondinha, Fonte dos Amores, Tapadas, Fândega, Leitão & Irmãos, Augusto Luís Mendes, Lamas, Nunes Brito, Moura Cabral, Lorimalhas, among others, are part of the industrial history of this village. The main and largest avenue in Loriga is named after Augusto Luís Mendes, one of the most outstanding industrialists in Loriga. The first factories used the hydraulic wheel as a source of power, which was transmitted through long shafts, with drums and belts. The hydraulic wheel is therefore the greatest symbol of the Loriga industry (which made this village in the region stand out even more) and is also the symbol of the history and origins of this industry, and therefore the coat of arms of Loriga has two hydraulic wheels.
The industrywool began to decline during the last decades of the last century, a factor that contributed to aggravate and seriously accelerate the progressive desertification of the village, a fact that generally affects the interior regions of Portugal due to poor land planning. It should be noted that the old textile industry, which emerged in the early nineteenth century in the context of the so-called industrial revolution, ended up causing the birth of other types of industry in Loriga. With tourism gaining more and more relevance today, the economy of Loriga is based on the metallurgical and bakery industries, commerce, catering, agriculture and pastoralism, the latter two with a reduced importance. Tourism will never be enough to sustain a population with acceptable levels for a village that has the category of village, as is the case of Loriga. Those who are five or more decades old and like Loriga feel great pain when they see the state to which this village has come, a village that once had a population that numbered in the thousands.
The area where there are the parishes of Alvoco da Serra, Cabeça, Sazes da Beira, Teixeira, Valezim, Vide, and the more than thirty annexed villages, which until October 1855 were part of the Municipality of Loriguense, constituted the founding parishes of the Association of Parishes of Serra da Estrela, headquartered in the village of Loriga.
Loriga and its region have enormous tourist potential and the only slopes and ski resorts in Portugal are located in the area of the parish of Loriga.
Official coat of arms of Loriga
The coat of arms of Loriga consists of a shield of blue, a Loriga that has on each side a hydraulic wheel, in the center and in chief a gold star; in campaign, a pile of two silver mounds, moving on the flanks and tip, loaded with a twin waved with blue. Silver mural crown of four towers. Silver stripe with the black legend " LORIGA ". The flag is quartered in blue and white. All this heraldry of Loriga was designed by the historian António Conde and has been approved by the competent authorities since the last century.
The Loriga (Lorica, cuirass, armor), origin of the gentile Loriguense and Loricense, symbolizes the proud millennial history and antiquity of Loriga, translated into this beautiful, millennial and unique name in Portugal, facts that are a source of pride for the true Loriguenses, that is, for all those who genuinely love their homeland (the others are responsible for the shameful issue of heraldry, hate the name of their land and that's also why they don't like to see Loriga on the coat of arms or on the logo of the village). Loriga is therefore the main and central piece that stands out the most in the coat of arms because it is the one that most defines the unique identity of this millenary village and of those who were born in it, and which therefore makes the heraldry of Loriga unique and unmistakable.
The hydraulic wheels symbolize the origins of the centennial industry in Lorigu, which began with the textile industry that later gave rise to other types of industry. The first factories were wool factories and all of them had in common the fact that they were moved by hydraulic wheels driven by the abundant and crystalline waters of the Loriga streams, which had previously been used to move the millstones of the mills that ground rye and corn grains. So the hydraulic wheel also symbolizes the ingenuity of the people of Loriga and this is the type of wheel that has to be on the coat of arms, any other does not make sense and makes the coat of arms poorer and more incomplete.
The star symbolizes the mountain with the same name where this millennial village is proudly located and which is part of the strong identity of this village and all those who were born in it and therefore, like the Loriga and the hydraulic wheel, the star is a fundamental piece in the coat of arms. Much can be said about the way this mountain has shaped the identity of this village and its natives. Loriga is situated in the heart of Serra da Estrela, very close to the highest point (the Tower) and the only existing ski resort in Portugal is located in Loriga.
The mounds symbolize the spectacular mountain landscape of Loriga and the twin waved in blue symbolizes the two streams that bathe Loriga, more specifically the Ribeira de São Bento and the Ribeira de Loriga (to which the ignorant give other names). Regarding the mounds, and contrary to what the ignorant, idiots, cynics, hypocrites, liars, responsible for the shameful issue of heraldry that has lasted for decades, the mounds do not represent Serra da Estrela nor can they represent, because there are mountains in many areas of Portugal, and other locations, for example in Trás-os-Montes, could have a coat of arms with the same type of mounds.
One of the main objectives of heraldry is to represent a unique and unmistakable identity, and in the case of the Loriga coat of arms it is exactly the Loriga (Lorica, cuirass, armor) that makes all the difference, and although there are dozens of other pieces that could be placed on a dis coat of armsSuch is the richness of its unique historical identity, Loriga is undoubtedly the most important. Therefore, without the Loriga, or without any of the other unique pieces related only to the history of this village, the coat of arms would be generalist and could represent dozens of villages, including and starting with some located in Serra da Estrela. And on the subject of Serra da Estrela and specific pieces, the seven-pointed star is the one that historically best represents Serra da Estrela in the coat of arms of Loriga, although it can be replaced by the vulgar and generic five-pointed star.
All those who understand Portuguese autarchic heraldry (including the competent authorities of the Heraldry Commission of the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists) and know at least minimally the history of Loriga, agree that the Loriga (Lorica, cuirass, armor), the Star and the Hydraulic Wheel are the best symbology for the coat of arms of this town, regardless of the colors of the pieces and the arrangement they have in the coat of arms, Neither crosses nor carretos/carretes (cogwheels) are ever part of the coat of arms of this village. The logo of Loriga is the second, the first logo was also designed by the historian António Conde and has the same symbology, the approval of the logo by the Parish Council of Loriga is the confirmation that the municipality considers Loriga to be the main piece of the town's coat of arms.
Village of LORIGA
It is necessary to underline the fact that no Portuguese village was demoted from its category, whether it was a town or a city. The old towns, most wrongly treated as villages and only a few treated as historic villages, ceased to be county seats after the reform carried out in the nineteenth century, but were never demoted from towns to villages despite the fact that the category of town was associated with the seat of the municipality. And it is also because there has never been this relegation that the old towns, today wrongly treated as villages, have the right to have a coat of arms with a mural crown of four towers, just like any town, whether historical or modern.
The charters elevated the villages to the category of village, and when there were several charters (this is the case of Loriga) each new charter granted meant the confirmation of this category of village. Therefore, in the case of historic villages it is wrong to call the village "elevation" because this erroneously called "elevation" is nothing more than a confirmation of the category of village that they have had since the first grant of a charter. If this historic town has more than one charter, then this "elevation to town" is just another confirmation of the category of town. The elevation to town only exists in fact if the locality has never received any charter, so it has never been elevated to town, that is, it is a modern town.
There are also historic cities and modern cities and here the same logic applies, in the case of historic cities the status of city has existed since they were elevated to that category in the past. There are cities and towns that are not county seats, the category of the village does not imply that it has the status of municipality.
Even if the conditions that led to the elevation to town or city disappear in the meantime, promotion and category remain, unless a law decrees relegation, something that never happened.
Loriga is a historic village, so it is one of the cases in which there was no elevation to village, what in fact happened in 1989 was the confirmation of the category of village, the previous confirmation happened in 1514 with the new charter of D. Manuel I. It is the confirmation of the category of village that the people of Loriga celebrate and should celebrate, just as they have celebrated it in the past, before 1989.

História de Loriga, with extracts from the work of historian António Conde "História concisa da vila de Loriga - Das origens à extinction do município", published on the official website of the Parish Council of Loriga and on the aforementioned website Terras de Portugal - Memória Portuguesa, on Wikipedia, an article created by historian António Conde, and on many other websites and in many other publications. This great Loriguense has been researching the history of Loriga for decades, at the cost of much sacrifice and many personal expenses, creating a very rich work, from which extracts can be read on many websites and in many other publications, including the official website of the Parish Council of Loriga and on the aforementioned website Terras de Portugal - Memória Portuguesa, as well as in the articles about Loriga in English and Portuguese that exist on Wikipedia and that were created by him. António Conde acts, does, criticizes what is wrong always presenting solutions, passionately loves his land and is allergic to hypocrisy and vanity fairs. The efficient, although discreet, but strongly documented research and dissemination work that the historian António Conde has been doing for decades, has borne fruit, and much of the information about Loriga disseminated there is due to the initiative of this great Loriguense. This great Loriguense created a very rich and extensive work which he called, História concisa da vila de Loriga - Das origens à extinction do município. António Conde acts, does, criticizes what is wrong, always presenting solutions, passionately defends his land, actively contributed to the development of his beloved homeland, his intense struggle for Loriga is strongly documented and has already been publicly praised, including in the newspaper Garganta de Loriga of which he was a collaborator for years. Loriga owes a lot to António Conde, a Loriguense of great culture, with many and diversified abilities, with a higher than average IQ, therefore being part of a privileged minority. In addition to his remaining work by Loriga, António Conde also designed the heraldry of Loriga with approval guaranteed by the legally competent authorities, that is, the Heraldry Commission of the AAP, being considered the best heraldry for this village, he designed dozens of other alternative proposals, containing all the symbology considered ideal for Loriga. He is a Loriguense of causes, always attentive to what is happening in his beloved homeland, always fighting coherently for the development and dissemination of Loriga, not refraining from denouncing those who harm this beautiful and historic village, authority is in fact and therefore something that he does not lack, starting with moral authority.

Documents - In these and other documents, published on this and many other websites, you can see extracts from the work of historian António Conde published on the official website of the town and the Parish Council of Loriga. In the upper left corner you can see the logo of the village and the parish council that the pseudo-Loriguenses wanted to eliminate because they were ashamed of the name of their land, the same main reason why they also wanted to eliminate Loriga in the town's coat of arms. Another strong reason is the fact that they hate the historian António Conde, the author of this coat of arms, so they also put petty personal motivations above the interests and image of Loriga, and this shameful case of heraldry is not the only one in which this type of people damaged Loriga and the image of the people of Loriga in the name of hatred, envy and other petty personal motivations.
With their dishonesty, including intellectual dishonesty, their envy and their incompetence, they reject everything that they consciously know is best for Loriga if they are works and/or initiatives of Loriguenses that they envy and hate. For many years, this type of people has harmed Loriga and is largely responsible for the disastrous situation that this village has reached!
Confirming all this, a proposal came to an application to the Parish Council of Loriga in which the historian António Conde would make his work on the history of Loriga (including all the documentation related to the research) available for the municipality to publish. The historian António Conde would give up the income from the sale of the book referring to copyright in favor of the municipality, as well as any profits obtained from the sale of the book, and the only thing he asked for in return was the correction of the crap made with the issue of heraldry and that, to reinforce the legitimacy of the initiative and if the mayors did not have the courage to correct this crap directly, that they would win by holding a referendum in which they would consult all the people of Loriga, both the residents of the village and those who left for other places. At the basis of this proposal was the ever-present concern of the historian António Conde with the image of his land, with the image of the people of Lorigu and in this case also with the opinion and will of the vast majority of the people of Lorigu who reject the shameful heraldry. He did not demand anything and would never do so, nor did he want to impose the heraldry he designed, unlike these people who were trying to impose an illegal heraldic aberration and who are now trying to impose a poor and shameful heraldry hated by the overwhelming majority of Loriguenses. The response to this proposal was a great and deafening silence of contempt. For a long time now, Zeca Maria's envious henchmen and lackeys have proclaimed and "decreed" that the historian António Conde is not welcome here in Loriga and have questioned his work, but when confronted with the proposal to publish that same work they have not even responded, concluding that they are also Zeca Maria's henchmen and lackeys because neither they nor their owner want anything done by António Conde, as valuable as it is and even if it is better for Loriga! In fact, a henchman and lackey of the mayor Zeca Maria had already told the historian António Conde to burn his work on the history of Loriga in the Christmas bonfire that is lit every year next to the Mother Church. This greatly strengthened the right that the historian António Conde already had to destroy his work if he wanted to do so. It is confirmed, and quoting the Bible, "it would be like giving pearls to pigs", these people hate the historian António Conde and therefore reject everything that comes from this great Loriguense (as well as from any other great Loriguense they hate), no matter how valuable it is and even if it is better for Loriga! These people despise the opinion of the overwhelming majority of Loriguenses also in relation to the shameful heraldry, which drags the image of Loriga and the image of the Loriguenses through the mud, because they are literally on Loriga and the Loriguenses! Demonstrably these incompetent and envious people do not like Loriga, despite falsely proclaiming the opposite, they only like their stupid ego and their petty personal interests!

LORIGA
Loriga (Portuguese pronunciation: [loˈɾiɡɐ]) is a civil parish (Portuguese: freguesia) and town in south-central part of the municipality of Seia, in central Portugal. Part of the district of Guarda, it is 20 km away from the city of Seia, 40 km away from Viseu, 80 km away from Guarda and 320 km from Lisbon, nestled in the Serra da Estrela mountain range. The area is 36.52 km², including the two localities, the town of Loriga and the village of Fontão.
History
Loriga was founded along a column between ravines where today the historic centre exists. The site was ostensibly selected more than 2600 years ago, owing to its defensibility, the abundance of potable water and pasturelands, and lowlands that provided conditions to practice both hunting and gathering/agriculture.
When the Romans arrived in the region, the settlement was concentrated into two areas. The larger, older and principal agglomeration was situated in the area of the main church and Rua de Viriato, fortified with a wall and palisade. The second group, in the Bairro de São Ginês, were some small homes constructed on the rocky promintory, which were later appropriated by the Visigoths in order to construct a chapel. The Roman road and two bridges (the second was destroyed in the 16th century after flooding in the Ribeira de São Bento) connected the outpost of Lorica to the rest of their Lusitanian province. The São Ginês' neighbouhood (São Gens), a local ex-libris, is the location of the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, an ancient Visigothic chapel.
Middle Ages
Loriga was the municipal seat since the 12th century, receiving Forals in 1136 (João Rhânia, master of the Terras de Loriga for over two decades, during the reign of Afonso Henriques), 1249 (during the reign of Afonso III), 1474 (under King Afonso V) and finally in 1514 (by King Manuel I).
Loriga was an ecclesiastical parish of the vicarage of the Royal Padroado and its Matriz Church was ordered to construct in 1233, by King Sancho II. This church, was to the invocation of Santa Maria Maior, and constructed over the ancient small Visigothic chapel (there is a lateral block with Visigoth inscriptions visible). Constructed in the Romanesque-style it consists of a three-nave building, with hints of the Old Cathedral of Coimbra. This structure was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake, and only portions of the lateral walls were preserved.
Monarchy
The 1755 earthquake resulted in significant damage to the town of Loriga, destroying homes and the parochial residence, in addition to opening-up cracks and faults in the town's larger buildings, such as the historic municipal council hall (constructed in the 13th century). An emissary of the Marquess of Pombal visited Loriga to evaluate the damage (something that did not happen in other nearby biggest parishes, like Covilhã) and provide support.
The residents of Loriga supported the Asolutionist forces of the Infante Miguel of Portugal against the Liberals, during the Portuguese Liberal Wars. It ceased to be the seat of a municipality in 1855 after the application of a territorial planning carried out during the XIX century, interestingly the same plan that gave rise to the Districts.
At the time of its municipal demise (October 1855), the municipality of Loriga included the parishes of Alvoco da Serra, Cabeça, Sazes da Beira, Teixeira, Valezim and Vide, as well as thirty other disincorporated villages.
Loriga was an industrial centre for textile manufacturing during the 19th century. It was one of the few industrialized centres of the region, even supplanting Seia until the middle of the 20th century. Only Covilhã out-performed Loriga in terms of businesses operating from its lands; companies such as Regato, Redondinha, Fonte dos Amores, Tapadas, Fândega, Leitão & Irmãos, Augusto Luís Mendes, Lamas, Nunes Brito, Moura Cabral and Lorimalhas, among others. The main roadway in Loriga, Avenida Augusto Luís Mendes, is named for one of the villages most illustrious industrialists. The wool industry started to decline during the last two decades of the 20th century, a factor that aggravated and accelerated the decline of the region.
Geography
Known locally as the "Portuguese Switzerland" due to its landscape that includes a principal settlement nestled in the mountains of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. It is located in the south-central part of the municipality of Seia, along the southeast part of the Serra, between several ravines, but specifically the Ribeira de São Bento and Ribeira de Loriga; it is 20 kilometres from Seia, 80 kilometres from Guarda and 300 kilometres from the national capital (Lisbon). A main town is accessible by the national roadway E.N. 231, that connects directly to the region of the Serra da Estrela by way of E.N.338 (which was completed in 2006), or through the E.N.339, a 9.2 kilometre access that transits some of the main elevations (960 metres near Portela do Arão or Portela de Loriga, and 1650 metres around the Lagoa Comprida).
Economy
The region is carved by U-shaped glacial valleys, modelled by the movement of ancient glaciers. The main valley, Vale de Loriga was carved by longitudinal abrasion that also created rounded pockets, where the glacial resistance was minor. Starting at an altitude of 1991 metres along the Serra da Estrela the valley descends abruptly until 290 metres above sea level (around Vide), passing villages such as Cabeça, Casal do Rei and Muro. The central town, Loriga, is seven kilometres from Torre (the highest point), but the parish is sculpted by cliffs, alluvial plains and glacial lakes deposited during millennia of glacial erosion, and surrounded by rare ancient forest that surrounded the lateral flanks of these glaciers.
Textiles are the principal local export; Loriga was a hub the textile and wool industries during the beginning-19th century, in addition to being subsistence agriculture responsible for the cultivation of corn. The Loriguense economy is based on metallurgical industries, bread-making, commercial shops, restaurants and agricultural support services.
While that textile industry has since dissipated, the town began to attract a tourist trade due to its proximity to the Serra da Estrela and Vodafone Ski Resort (the only ski center in Portugal), which was constructed totally the parish limits.
Loriga is a historic town in Portugal with a history that dates back over 2,600 years. The town's name comes from the Latin word lorica, which means "armor".
Founding
The town was founded more than 2,000 years ago. The site was chosen for its defensibility, water supply, and pasturelands. The Lusitanians settled the town.
Roman occupation
The Romans called the town Lorica. The town was part of the Roman province of Lusitania. A 1st-century Roman road connected Lorica to the rest of the province.
Visigothic occupation
The Visigoths appropriated some small homes in the Bairro de São Ginês or Genês (Gens) to build a chapel.
Notable people
Viriathus, a famous Lusitanian leader and Portuguese national hero, is known to have been from Loriga.
Coat of arms
The town's coat of arms features the lorica (armor).
Official Coat of Arms of Loriga
The coat of arms of Loriga, Portugal is a blue shield with the following features:
A Loriga (armor) in the center.
Two hydraulic wheels.

A pile of two silver bunds with a blue-waved twin at the base.
A silver mural crown with four towers on top of the shield.
A silver listel with the black legend "LORIGA".

Loriga (pron.PT [lo'ɾigɐ]) is a village and parish in the municipality of Seia, district of Guarda, in the province of Beira Alta, in the central region and sub-region of Serra da Estrela, Portugal. It has an area of 36.52 km² and an annexed village, Fontão. It is part of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park.
Decades ago it was called the "Portuguese Switzerland" due to the characteristics of its beautiful landscape. It is located from 770m of altitude, surrounded by mountains, all with more than 1500m of altitude, of which Penha dos Abutres (1828m of altitude) and Penha do Gato (1771m) stand out, and is embraced by two watercourses: Ribeira de Loriga and Ribeira de S.Bento, which join after the E.T.A.R. of the village. The Ribeira de Loriga is one of the largest tributaries of the Alva River.
Historic center
The historic center of the village is located on the hill between the Loriga and São Bento streams, where the village was founded more than 2600 years ago. The reasons for choosing the location are obvious even to those with rudimentary knowledge. Given the antiquity of the village and the human presence in this imposing Loriga Glacier Valley, it was, is and will be normal to discover archaeological remains in various places, because just as today there is human intervention around the village, the same happened around the village existing in the time of the Lusitanians and the Romans. Even the layout of the ancient Roman road points to the already existence of the village in this place. Stupid theories, such as the birth and/or passage of Loriga through other places, such as the so-called Chão do Soito, therefore have no place, they are demonstrative of the ignorance of those who defend them, and are also a certificate of mental retardation passed on to the founders of the village.
The founders of Loriga are pointed out as being the protagonists of an anecdote and as being mentally slow and mentally retarded, they founded the village in the wrong place until one of them, smarter than the others, slapped him on the forehead and exclaimed: "Compadres", we are being stupid let's move next door which is better, We have a defensible hill between two streams, more space next to better pastures, arable land and an abundance of water!
The Romans were also stupid because when they arrived they decided that in the Loriga Valley their road would be built with a large slope to be able to pass on the hill between streams where there was no village or anything that justified the "aberrant deviation from all the logic of good engineering"!
In fact, these people, who unfortunately were born in Loriga, are specialists in mistreating the image of Loriga and the image of the people of Loriga and call into question the place of the foundation of Loriga, the patron saint of Loriga and the people of Loriga and the patron saint of the parish and the Mother Church, the history of Loriga, its antiquity (including the antiquity of its status as a village and its textile industry), its name and the way it is pronounced (the BURROS say that it is pronounced Luriga), its heritage, its gentile, the place of its foundation, its heraldry, the date of the foundation of the Lorigu institutions, etc.]
Village
The village is endowed with a wide range of infrastructures, such as the C+S Dr. Reis Leitão School, the Loriga Recreational and Musical Society - Loriga Philharmonic Band, founded in 1905, the Loriga Volunteer Fire Department, whose services are developed in the area of the former Loricense Municipality, the Nossa Senhora da Guia Rest Home, one of the last important social works, the Loriguense Association for the Support of the Elderly, the Loriguense Sports Group, founded in 1934, GNR Post, Post Office, banking services, pharmacy, EB1 School, EB23 School and pre-school, river beach, ski resort (unique in Portugal), etc.
Throughout the year, Christmas is celebrated in a special way, with the traditional bonfire and the typical sweets and other Loriguense delicacies of the season. At Easter, in addition to the traditional Easter visit, the Amenta das Almas stands out, male nocturnal songs, which evoke the souls of deceased loved ones, at the time of Lent but also at the time of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. The festivities in honour of Saint Anthony (during the month of June) and Saint Sebastian (on the last Sunday of July) are also celebrated, with their respective perks and processions. However, the highest and most popular point of the religious festivities is the festival dedicated to the patron saint of emigrants in Loriga, Nossa Senhora da Guia, which takes place every year on the first Sunday of August. It is recalled in this regard that, contrary to what some erroneously say and write out there, the patron saint of the town of Loriga and of the people of Loriga is Santa Maria Maior, and for this reason she has been the patron saint of the Mother Church and the parish since the thirteenth century, being a question of faith, a question of truth, a question of history, and a matter of respect for the history and historical identity of Loriga. On the second Sunday, the feast in honor of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda takes place in the beautiful schist village of Fontão de Loriga.
The gastronomy of Loriga is part of what is considered the most typical and richest of Beira Alta, where the high-calorie dishes stand out, the sausages, the feijoada (with beans, a kind of white bean, larger than the usual known locally as "Calhorras"), the kid in the oven, the corn bread (the real and famous typical bread of Loriga is white, cooked in a wood oven and has no flour from any other cereal), sheep and goat cheese dairy, namely the famous Serra cheese (with PDO), juniper brandy, etc. Most of the typical sweets and desserts were and are made to celebrate Easter and Christmas. Among the sweets, the sweet broínhas, the arroz doce, the carolo (sweet made with corn), the botelha (dessert made with pumpkin), the tapioca (dessert similar to rice pudding, made with tapioca broken into grains - imported by the Loriguense community in Brazil) and the famous Bolo Negro de Loriga stand out. The importance of unique gastronomy is reflected in the Confraria da Broa and Bolo Negro de Loriga, in fact these two delights from Loriga were among the finalists of the 7 Gastronomic Wonders of Portugal. Loriga is part of the Shale and Corn Route.
The famous river beach of Loriga was one of the 298 national beaches awarded the blue flag; since June 2012 it has received the "Gold Quality" flag, awarded by Quercus. Both flags were initially raised on 24 June 2012. On May 5, 2012, the river beach of Loriga, was selected among the 21 finalists, out of a total of 70 pre-finalists, divided into 7 categories, to compete in the contest "7 Wonders - Beaches of Portugal", in the category of "river beaches". The river beach is bathed by the Ribeira de Loriga whose source is located in the upper area of the Loriga Glacier Valley, between the Loriga Dam and the Loriga Ski Resort.
Twinning agreements
Loriga entered into a twinning agreement with: A vila, now the city of Sacavém, in the municipality of Loures, on June 1, 1996.
Concise history of the village of Loriga
Lorica was the name given by the Romans to Lobriga (Lusitanian name), a village that was, in the Hermínios (present-day Serra da Estrela), a strong Lusitanian bastion against the Roman invaders. The Herminius were the largest Lusitanian fortress and Lorica located in the heart of this fortress, near the highest point. Lorica, from Latin, is the name of an ancient warrior armor, from which Loriga derived, with the same meaning. The Roman soldiers and legionaries themselves used Lorica. The Romans gave it such a name, due to its strategic position in the mountains, and its protagonism during the war with the Lusitanians (* LORICA LUSITANORUM CASTRUM EST). It is a rare case in Portugal of a name that has remained practically unchanged for more than two thousand years, being highly significant of the antiquity and history of the village (also for this reason and because the people of Loriguenses are proud of the name of their land, the cuirass is the central and main piece of the coat of arms and logo of this beautiful and historic village). The Lorica / Loriga armor is the origin of the name of the village, and the origin of the gentile Loricense / Loriguense and the main and indispensable piece of the town's coat of arms. Loriga is proud of its millennial name, a rare case of a name that has remained practically unchanged for more than two thousand years. Although some "Loriguenses" do not like, deny, disown and are ashamed of the name of their land (and therefore do not like to see Lorica/Loriga on the coat of arms or on the logo of the village), the reality is that this village has the name of armor, armor. History, etymology and philology say that Loriga derives from Lorica, a Latin word that has exactly the same meaning, consequently the gentile Loricense is the same as Loriguense.]
In Loriga there is an anthropomorphic grave over 2600 years old known for centuries as the Coffin of Moura because, when it was rediscovered in the fourteenth century, it was wrongly attributed to the Moors.
The village was strategically founded on top of a hill, between two streams, in a beautiful valley of glacial origin. It is evidently unknown the distant date of its foundation, but it is known that the village has existed for more than two thousand six hundred years, and that it originally arose in the same place where the historic center of the village is today, on the hill between the Loriga and São Bento streams. In the Loriga Valley, where human presence has been a fact for more than five thousand years, there are currently, in addition to the village, the villages of Cabeça, Muro, Casal do Rei, and Vide.
From pre-Roman times there is, for example, an anthropomorphic grave with more than two thousand years, in a place where there was an ancient sanctuary, at a time when the name of the village was Lobriga, an etymology of evident Celtic origin. Lobriga, was an important fortified settlement, Celtic and Lusitanian, in the mountains.
Local tradition, and several old documents, point to Loriga as having been the birthplace of Viriato, who was born in Hermínios where he was a shepherd since he was a child. It is interesting the description in the manuscript book História da Luzitânia, by the Bishop-Major of the Kingdom (1580): "… He was succeeded by the pastor Viriato, born in Lobriga, today the villa of Loriga, at the top of the Serra da Estrêla, Bishopric of Coimbra, to whom, at the age of forty, they will acclaim King of the Luzitanos, and married in Évora with a noble lady in the year 147…".
Among the various documents that speak of Loriga as the birthplace of Viriathus, this is the most curious, with others being the oldest known dating from 1139. There was even a project to conconstruction of a monument to Viriato in Loriga, an idea that unfortunately did not materialize, but the old and documented tradition that connects Loriga to Viriato is remembered in the name of the main street in the oldest area of the historic center of the village, and more recently in the event Loriga Vila Lusitana, inspired by the work and ideas of the historian António Conde.
Celts, Celtiberians and Lusitanians walked in Loriga. Loriga is proud of the ancient Celtic and Lusitanian past, and is proud of the very old and documented tradition of being the birthplace of Viriato, and there was a project for a monument that unfortunately did not materialize. Of the known documents that speak of this tradition, the best known and most curious date from 1580 and the oldest date from 1139. The connection between Loriga and Viriato has long been remembered in the name of the main street in the oldest area of the historic center of the village and more recently through the Loriga Vila Lusitana event, inspired by the work and ideas of the historian António Conde.
In Loriga there is the Roman road (first century BC) that stands out the most in the area that is why it became known as Calçadas. The Roman road points to the hill between streams where the village has always existed and was founded, and is at the origin of some of the main streets in the lower and oldest area of Loriga, such as Rua do Porto, Rua do Vinhô, part of Rua de Viriato, Rua Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral, part of Avenida Augusto Luís Mendes and Rua do Teixeiro. It is after this last mentioned Rua do Teixeiro that you can admire the Roman bridge that still exists over the Ribeira de Loriga, the other Roman bridge that existed over the Ribeira de São Bento collapsed in the sixteenth century after a great flood caused by heavy rains after a heavy snowfall, having been replaced at the end of the nineteenth century by the well-known Ponte do Arrocho existing there. The ignorant confuse the Arrocho Bridge with the Roman Bridge, they exchanged the facts and changed the bridges, and stupidly invented a lego bridge.
The Roman bridge over the Ribeira de Loriga was built in the first century BC. Some ignorant people changed the facts and changed the bridges, invented a ridiculous "Lego Bridge", ignoring the specifics of building a masonry bridge, starting with the arch (it's not the same thing as building a wall of a "courela"!), and confuse this bridge with the Roman bridge built at the same time over the Ribeira de São Bento, which collapsed in the sixteenth century after a great flood caused by heavy rains that fell shortly after a great snowfall. Until the end of the nineteenth century, there was a wooden crossing in the same place of the Ribeira de São Bento until the construction at that time of the stone bridge that existed there, which became known as the Arrocho Bridge. Long known as the Roman Bridge, which it is in fact, the most ridiculous argument used to deny the antiquity of this bridge is the fact that in much more recent times supposedly some ignorant person called it New Bridge, as if this bridge had something new. At the time (late nineteenth century, early twentieth century) the New Bridge was actually the recently built Arrocho Bridge, in Ribeira de São Bento. In several photos, taken and published many years ago by the historian António Conde, one can see the recurring situation of contempt for the little historical heritage that still remains in Loriga (those who pass by there today see the same shame), the vegetation that covers the masonry and thatand contributes to the degradation of this monument.)
There are still parts of the road, and one of the two bridges (1st century BC), with which the Romans connected Lorica to the rest of the empire. The Roman bridge that still exists, over the Ribeira de Loriga, is in good condition, and is a good example of the architecture of the time.
The Roman road connected Lorica to Egitânia (Idanha-a-Velha), Talabara (Alpedrinha), Sellium (Tomar), Scallabis (Santarém), Olisipo (Lisbon) and Longóbriga (Longroiva), Verurium (Viseu), Balatucelum (Bobadela), Conímbriga (Condeixa) and Aeminium (Coimbra). It was a kind of strategic road intended to help control the Hermínios mountains where very battle-hardened Lusitanian tribes lived.
When the Romans arrived, the village was divided into two nuclei separated by a few hundred meters. The largest, oldest and main was located in the area where today there is the Mother Church and part of Rua de Viriato, being defended by walls and palisades. Rua de Viriato, in the part between the former headquarters of the Grupo Desportivo Loriguense and Casa do Povo, corresponds exactly to part of the route of the defensive line that surrounded the old Lusitanian village. The other nucleus, consisting only of a few dwellings, was located higher up next to a small rocky promontory, on top of which the Visigoths later built a hermitage dedicated to Saint Gens.
With Roman rule, the importance of Lorica grew, a Castro village that received populations of fortified settlements existing in other places of the Hermínios, and which have since been abandoned. This happened because these fortified settlements were located in places where the only advantage was the ease of defense. Places that, unlike Lorica, were only a place of defense and temporary refuge, where dwellings were far from the resources necessary for survival, such as water, pastures and arable soil. One of these abandoned hillforts, which defended the entrance to the valley where the hill where Lorica stood was located, was located on the still known Monte do Castelo, near Portela de Loriga. In the eighteenth century the ruins of the foundations of the schist houses that existed there were still visible, but today only loose stones can be seen on the site. By the way, the idea created according to which the Lusitanians only built their dwellings on top of the hills, which they left only with the arrival of the Romans, is completely wrong. On the contrary, they knew how to choose the best locations and ease of defense was not the only criterion. In this case the Lusitanians chose a hill surrounded by streams, a defensible place near water and the lower area where they had more resources to feed their flocks and practice some agriculture. It is therefore not surprising the choice of that location, it was there that the village was founded and it was there that it has always existed.
Loriga was also important to the Visigoths, who created the parish and left a hermitage dedicated to S.Gens, a saint of Celtic origin, martyred in Arles, Gaul, at the time of Emperor Diocletian. The chapel underwent alteration works and the patron saint was replaced, becoming that of Nossa Senhora do Carmo. With the passage of the centuries, the people of Loric came to know the saint as S.Ginês, today the name of a neighborhood in this place of the current historic center of the village. The current derivation of the Roman name, Loriga, began to be used by the Visigoths, but only definitively imposed itself on the Visigoths.
The Mother Church has, on one of the side doors, a stone with Visigothic inscriptions, used from an old small temple existing on the site when it was built in 1233. The old church was a Romanesque temple with three naves, the exterior design recalled the Old Cathedral of Coimbra (although obviously with smaller dimensions and monumentality), had the ceiling and vault painted with frescoes and, when it was destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, it had on the walls, paintings of the school of Grão Vasco. From the primitive Romanesque church of the thirteenth century, parts of the side walls and other masonry remain.
Since the Christian reconquest, Loriga belonged to the Crown and the Vicariate of the Royal Padroado (except for a period of about twenty years in the time of D. Afonso Henriques in which it belonged to João Viegas, author of the first charter of Loriga), and it was the king himself (at the time D. Sancho II) who ordered the construction of the Mother Church, whose patron saint was, as today, of Santa Maria Maior. In the second half of the twelfth century there was already the parish of Loriga, which was created by the Visigoths and then belonged to the diocese of Egitania (later transferred to Guarda), and the faithful of the then few and small places or "couples" from the surroundings, came to the village to attend religious services. Some of these places, today parishes, were, from the sixteenth century onwards, acquiring some "religious" autonomy and becoming parishes although dependent on Loriga, starting with Alvoco, and followed by Vide, Cabeça and Teixeira.
In the oldest area of the historic center of the village there is an ancient fountain, already existing on the site in Roman times. This fountain has had several aspects throughout history and right next to it were found and despised older remains of what is known as Fonte do Vale.
The Visigothic hermitage of São Gens was rebuilt and with another patron saint (Our Lady of Mount Carmel). It should be noted that the façade and the date displayed on it correspond to the last reconstruction carried out, and since there is nothing on the site that informs about the antiquity of this place of worship, visitors get a wrong idea about this monument. It would also be correct and desirable that there should be an image of Saint Gens inside the chapel as a respect to this saint who was the previous patron saint, thus recalling an ancient, millennial, despised and forgotten devotion.
The Roman legionary soldiers wore the Lorica / Loriga armor, origin of the name of the village, origin of the gentile Loricense / Loriguense and the main and indispensable piece of the town's coat of arms. Loriga is proud of its millennial name, a rare case of a name that has remained practically unchanged for more than two thousand years. Although some "Loriguenses" do not like, deny and deny the name of their land, the reality is that this village is named after a cuirass, Loriga derives from Lorica which has exactly the same meaning, and Loricense is the same as Loriguense.]
There is a stone with Visigothic inscriptions in the Mother Church where the date of construction of the original Romanesque church (1233) was engraved, which replaced a Visigothic temple there, also dedicated to Our Lady and from which the stone was used.
In the Mother Church there was a small part of the masonry walls that resisted the earthquake of 1755. Now that fortunately the walls have been freed from the plaster, which covered them for a long time, the changes made along the lines of the walls can be clearly seen. centuries, and the differences between the various types of masonry.
There is a fountain in Rua do Vinhô, for which a stone was used that displays an inscription from the thirteenth century (1200), a date that was recently and shamefully changed to 1900.
Next to Largo do Reboleiro there are medieval remains of a manor house whose design has been changed but of which the balcony still stands out, which was fenced with rammed earth and is currently separated from the rest of the building inside which you can see what remains of the old access. It would be good, not least because the historical heritage is not abundant in Loriga because it was almost all destroyed, if the entire complex were restored, returning it, as far as possible, to its old appearance, including the balcony again and cleaning the walls of the plaster that covers them.
The Pillory (reconstructed 13th century, it is erroneously indicated on a tombstone as being from the 16th century) is located in front of the old Loriga City Hall building, which has since been adapted to a private residence. The "Manueline" pillories (sixteenth century) are easily distinguished from the older ones, in fact fortunately there are still examples of one and the other to make comparisons, and the old pillory of Loriga was clearly prior to the sixteenth century. It should be noted that, although the reconstruction of the pillory is commendable, it was not done in the most correct way, and as if that were not enough, they also placed a tombstone with wrong information. The old pillory had three steps at the base that was circular, the column was octave and had a moving iron ring, and at the top it had a stone carved with the arms of the village. Although there are doubts about all the pieces that made up these ancient arms of the village, the cuirass (Loriga) was one of them as well as a seven-pointed star, and it is very likely that the coat of arms was made up of only these two pieces. Be that as it may, the reconstruction should respect at least what is known to be absolutely certain and that has not been respected: an octave column and a circular base with three steps and at the top a stone bearing a Loriga and a seven-pointed star.
The town of Loriga received charters from João Rhânia (João Viegas, lord of the Lands of Loriga for about two decades, in the time of D. Afonso Henriques) in 1136, from D. Afonso III in 1249, from D. Afonso V in 1474, and received a new charter from D. Manuel I in 1514.
With King Afonso III, the town received the first royal charter (given directly by the king), and in 1474, King Afonso V donated Loriga to the nobleman Álvaro Machado, heir of Luís Machado, who was also lord of Oliveira do Hospital and Sandomil, a donation confirmed in 1477, and later by King Manuel I. However, after the death of the aforementioned nobleman, the village returned definitively to the assets of the Crown. In the twelfth century, the municipality of Loriga covered the area between Portela de Loriga (today also known as Portela do Arão) and the area around Pedras Lavradas, including the areas of the current parishes of Alvoco da Serra, Cabeça, Teixeira, and Vide. Cabeça belonged to the municipality (since the twelfth century), to the parish (since the sixth century) and to the parish of Loriga and for many years it was known as São Romão do Casal da Cabeça. It was elevated to a parish by charter of King João VI on January 13, 1800. On May 12, 1806 tevand the detachment of the parish of Loriga. In the first half of the nineteenth century, in 1836, the municipality of Loriga began to include Valezim and Sazes da Beira. Valezim, the current historic village, received a charter in 1201, and the municipality was extinguished in 1836, becoming part of Loriga. Alvoco da Serra received a charter in 1514 and Vide enjoyed some autonomy in the seventeenth century and was elevated to a parish, but without ever having received a charter or village category and this is reflected in its coat of arms that has only three towers, so in practice it never ceased to be under the administration of the municipality of Loriga, but they were fully included in the municipality of Loriga in 1828 and 1834 respectively, The seven parishes that occupy the area of the former municipality of Loricó, currently constitute the so-called Region of Loriga. These parishes also constituted the Association of Parishes of Serra da Estrela, headquartered in the village of Loriga.
Loriga has been an industrialized village (textile) since the beginning of the nineteenth century, when it "joined" the so-called industrial revolution, but in the fourteenth century the people of Lorica were already producing bureis and other woolen cloths. Loriga became one of the most industrialized localities in Beira Interior, and the current county seat only managed to surpass it in the middle of the twentieth century. Demonstrative of the genius of the people of Lorica, is that all this happened despite the difficult access to the village, which until the thirties of the twentieth century, was limited to the old Roman road of Lorica, built in the first century BC. Company names, such as Regato, Fândega, Leitão & Irmãos, Redondinha, Tapadas, Augusto Luís Mendes, Moura Cabral, Lorimalhas, Lages Santos, Nunes Brito, etc., are part of the rich industrial history of this village. The largest and main avenue in Loriga is named after Augusto Luís Mendes, the most outstanding of the old industrialists of Loriça.
It is necessary to underline the fact that the first industrial facilities that appeared in Loriga, in the first half of the nineteenth century, operated in existing buildings and that were adapted and expanded, only later did the first factories created from scratch begin to operate. The factory buildings, some of them large, were built in masonry as was usual at the time, a much more time-consuming job than what happens today when it comes to erecting industrial facilities. Therefore, it is correct to state without any doubt that Loriga has been an industrialized village since the beginning of the nineteenth century, and there has been a rapid adaptation of an activity that has existed for centuries in artisanal molds.
Later, metallurgy, pastry, and more recently, tourism (Loriga has enormous tourist potential), became part of the pillars of the town's economy.
Another proof of the genius of Loriga is one of Loriga's exlibris, the numerous terraces and its complex irrigation network, built over many hundreds of years, and which transformed a beautiful but rocky valley into a fertile valley.
Leitão & Irmãos and Regato are two of the old industrial units of Loriga, created from scratch in the nineteenth century. The so-called industrial revolution arrived in Loriga at the beginning of the nineteenth century, transporting to the modern era an artisanal activity of wool that already existed in this village for more than 600 years. It should be noted that the first industrial unitsPlants established in Loriga began to operate in existing facilities adapted for this purpose, and only later were the first factories built from scratch. In an old photo of the Fábrica do Regato you can still admire the hydraulic wheel, origin of the driving force of these factories, Loriga is proud of its centennial wool industry, origin of all the industry implanted in this village, and therefore the hydraulic wheel is one of the fundamental pieces of heraldry of this village, and therefore the coat of arms of Loriga has two hydraulic wheels.
The Cruzeiro da Carvalha is erected in the original place, once known as Carvalha and now as Carreira (Avenida Augusto Luís Mendes)
The Cruzeiro da Independência, now existing in Largo da Fonte do Mouro, was once erected next to the old chapel of Santo António (fourteenth century), unfortunately demolished in the twentieth century, one of the many victims of the destruction of almost all the historical heritage in Loriga.
But Loriga was eventually defeated by a political and administrative enemy, local and national, against which it had to fight since the mid-nineteenth century. The history of the town of Loriga is, in fact, an example of the consequences that the clashes of a civil war can have on the future of a locality and a region. Loriga had the category of county seat since the twelfth century, but for having supported the so-called Absolutists against the Liberals in the Portuguese civil war, it was punished by ceasing to be a county seat in 1855 during the ongoing administrative reform. The conspiracy driven by the expansionist desires of the locality that benefited from the fact, precipitated the events. This was a serious political and administrative error, as has been confirmed; it was, at the very least, a case of unjust political revenge, at a time when democracy did not exist and cronyism and corruption reigned, and thus began the decline of the entire region of Loriga (former municipality of Loriga).
If nothing truly effective is done, starting with the town of Loriga, this region will be desertified within a few decades, which, as in relation to other relevant historical lands in the interior of the country, will certainly be considered a national shame. Suffice it to say that Loriga lost more than half of its population between 1989 (the year of confirmation of the village category) and 2015, and the situation continued to worsen.
It would also confirm the obvious existence of serious and successive errors in cohesion, administration and spatial planning policies, not to say non-existence. To avoid such a situation, shameful for the country, it is necessary at least to put into practice what is already recognized on paper: to develop the village of Loriga, the center and center of the region.
[ Notes: Unfortunately it is noted that politicians have not changed since the nineteenth century nor have they learned from their mistakes, as confirmed with the "administrative reform" of 2013 in which dubious criteria were also used in the extinction of many of the parishes, and one of these cases was the shameful case of the extinction of the parish of Cabeça. Cabeça belonged to the municipality (since the twelfth century), to the parish (since the sixth century) and to the parish of Loriga and the affective connection remains, in addition to the fact that Loriga has always been the service provider and is geographically closer. An administrative reform carried out in the twenty-first century, with a supposedly democratic regime in force would be supposed to be, it was done in a more competent way and the populations were heard, but unfortunately that was not what happened, and in more than a hundred years there will still be many negative marks of this "reform", just as today there are still many negative marks of what was carried out in the nineteenth century with the extinction of municipalities, adding more wounds to those that never healed. In the Region of Loriga and in the municipality of Seia, the blatant and scandalous example is the case of the parish of Cabeça, whose extinction and aggregation solution found were based on false arguments and dubious motivations, in addition to the fact that the will of the people of Cabeça, who defended the most logical solution, was disregarded. The arguments used for the chosen aggregation solution were the subject of ridicule in the region, in fact everyone in the region, obviously starting with the Cabecenses, knows what motivated the extinction of the parish of Cabeça in the way it was done, but few have the courage to say it openly. In fact, this region was negatively marked by the aforementioned two administrative reforms, and the people of Lorigu will never forget both.
Manuel I. It is the confirmation of the category of village that the people of Loriga celebrate and should celebrate, just as they have celebrated it in the past, before 1989.]
In Loriga there is the only existing ski resort in Portugal, a fact that has been purposely omitted by those who have the obligation to disclose it. Loriga, is the snow capital of Portugal. The Loriga Ski Resort is located in the Loriga Glacier Valley, near the Torre side, with the Loriga Gorge in the background.
The beautiful and always awarded river beach of the village of Loriga is located in one of the most beautiful places in the Loriga Glacier Valley, in the place known for centuries as Chão da Ribeira, the Ribeira de Loriga also mistakenly known as Ribeira das Courelas, Ribeira da Nave and other names.
ROMAN ROADS IN PORTUGAL - Roman Remains Georeferenced in Loriga
The name LORICA appears as being from Roman times in a medieval Visigothic document with references to the area. It was in fact in the Visigothic era that the Loriga "version" began to replace the name Lorica that came from Roman times, but the original name given by the Romans only fell into total disuse during the first half of the thirteenth century. the first known documents where this town appears referred to as Loriga. In the documents prior to these inquiries, Loriga is always referred to as Lorica, except in a document from the Visigothic era, but in this it is stated that the Romans gave the name of Lorica to the village and that the Visigoths also came to know it as Loriga. However, the toponym Loriga (the derivation of the Roman (Latin) name Lorica), fell into disuse from the Islamic conquest until the thirteenth century. it later began to be referred to as Portela de Aran, after Aaron, and finally of Aaron, the origin of the latter toponym being unknown (Aran, Aaron, Aaron).]
The Roman road to Lorica was a kind of strategic road, intended to help control the Montes Herminios where, as is known, very battle-hardened Lusitanian tribes lived. This road connected two major crossroads, the one connecting Conimbriga to the north and the one connecting Yaegitania to the south. The exact locations of the crossroads are not known, but everything indicates that it would be in the north somewhere near the current Bobadela, an ancient Roman settlement.
As for the remains of the original Roman pavement, they can be found in the area of Calçadas, where they were at the origin of this name, and dispersed in small traces to the area of Portela de Loriga or Portela do Arão, being the same road.
As a curiosity, the Roman road was used from the time it was built, probably around the end of the first century BC, until the thirties of the twentieth century when the current EN231 came into operation. Without the Roman road it would have been impossible for Loriga's already great feat to become one of the largest textile industrial centers in Beira Interior during the nineteenth century.
- Proven facts: Lorica was the old name of Loriga, there were two Roman bridges, one of them still exists, and the other, built over the Ribeira de São Bento, collapsed in the sixteenth century, and both were part of the Roman road that connected the village to the rest of the Roman Empire.
The Roman bridge that collapsed was located near the place where the current bridge has always been known as Ponte do Arrocho, also built in stone but dating from the end of the nineteenth century. The old Roman road went down the current Rua do Porto, went up the current Rua do Vinhô, took part of the current Rua de Viriato passing next to the then existing village, it went up the current Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral streets, passed through the current Avenida Augusto Luis Mendes, in the area known as Carreira, following the current Rua do Teixeiro towards the Roman bridge over the Ribeira de Loriga, also mistakenly known as Ribeira da Nave and Ribeira das Courelas.
The Roman bridge still exists over the Ribeira de Loriga. (This bridge was built in the first century BC). Some ignorant people have invented a ridiculous "Lego Bridge", ignoring the specifics of building a masonry bridge, starting with the arch (it's not the same thing as building a "coussel of a leather"!), and confuse this bridge with the Roman bridge built at the same time over the Ribeira de São Bento, which collapsed in the sixteenth century after a great flood caused by heavy rains that fell right after a great snowfall. Until the end of the nineteenth century, there was a wooden crossing in the same place of the Ribeira de São Bento until the construction at that time of the stone bridge that existed there, which became known as the Arrocho Bridge. The most ridiculous argument used by the ignorant to deny the antiquity of the bridge is that supposedly someone called it the New Bridge, but it has long been known as the Roman Bridge, which it is. In the photos and locally you can see the recurring situation of the vegetation "hanging" on the walls of the bridge, which in addition to being ugly contributes to its degradation.
Between the chapel of São Sebastião and the cemetery, there was a section of well-preserved Roman pavement that left no doubt to anyone about its true origin, but unfortunately a part was destroyed and the rest buried when they made the road between the end of Rua do Porto and the cemetery.
Unfortunately the historical heritage built was never estimated in Loriga, and so it was almost all demolished, and the little that remains is underestimated and undervalued…
In an area purposely known as Calçadas, already away from the village, between the cemetery and Portela de Loriga, there are still well-preserved traces of the primitive pavement of the Roman road.
The bridge over the Ribeira de São Bento, built in the late nineteenth century to replace the Roman bridge that collapsed in the sixteenth century after a great flood. The Roman bridge was replaced by a wooden crossing, until the construction of this bridge that became known as the Arrocho Bridge. The Roman road passed through there and was the origin of the contiguous Rua do Porto. The ignorant confused and exchanged the facts (it is a recurring practice), and they also changed the bridges, confusing this bridge with the Roman bridge in Ribeira de Loriga which, and hilariously, they invented as a kind of "Lego Bridge". The most ridiculous argument used by the ignorant to deny the antiquity of the Roman bridge over the Ribeira de Loriga is that supposedly someone called it Ponte Nova, a reality applied to the Ponte do Arrocho because at the time (late nineteenth century, early twentieth century) it was really a new bridge. This bridge has been slightly altered, having been added in height to level and smooth the climb at the beginning of Rua do Porto. In the photos and locally you can see the recurring situation of the vegetation "hanging" on the walls of the bridge, which in addition to being ugly contributes to its degradation.

The Parish and the Mother Church of the village of Loriga
Santa Maria Maior is the patron saint of Loriga and of the people of Loriga and the patron saint of the Mother Church since at least the thirteenth century. The church was better after the last restoration (this time better done in which some errors made in previous restautos, as happened in the twentieth century) of the Mother Church of the village dedicated to Santa Maria Maior, patron saint of Loriga and the people of Loriga. Even the stonework helps to reveal the reconstructions and alterations made to the building over almost eight centuries.
São Gens, to which the people of Lorigu gave the nickname of São Ginês and São Genês, and its hermitage is today dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Carmo and the current appearance exists after the last reconstruction corresponding to the date engraved on the façade. This date and the current appearance of the chapel mislead visitors because, while the contempt for history and heritage continues in Loriga, there is no information about the antiquity of this place of worship. In addition to placing a tombstone on the site recalling the antiquity of this temple, it would also be logical to place in the chapel an image of Saint Gens to remember the ancient patron saint and an ancient devotion that, for reasons still obscure, was forgotten and despised by the people of Lorigu.
It is known that Loriga is a village that has more than two thousand six hundred years of existence in the exact place where the historic center of the village exists, a hill between streams, defensible and close to two abundant water lines. And regarding access to water, the inhabitants of this multi-millennial village also had a spring available, today known as Fonte do Vale, and which is known to have also been highly valued later in Roman and medieval times.
It is known that at that time the village extended from approximately the place where there is the convergence of three streets (commonly known as the square), and the area where today is the ALATI day center. The village was defended by walls and palisades and it is known that the current Rua de Viriato, in the section between the former headquarters of the GDL and the old Casa do Povo, coincides exactly with a part of this defensive line of the village.
The place where the churchyard and the church now exist was the central point of this village, and would remain so for many centuries. It is therefore completely natural that with the Christianization of the population and the arrival of the Visigoths this place was chosen to build the first known Christian temple of the then Lorica.
It is known that the Visigoths built at least two temples in Lorica, and I say at least because I found evidence, which I could not confirm of the existence of another hermitage besides the one they built where today is the chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and which was dedicated to Saint Gens and the small church that was dedicated to Our Lady where today there is the Mother Church. At one point I even thought it was the chapel of São Bento, the one that gave its name to the area and the stream but this, although it was confirmed to have already existed in the twelfth century, is not prior to the tenth century, a hermitage of which the traces and exact location remain to be discovered but which is known to have been built in an elevated position, close to the EN339 road.
What is certain is that the Visigoths built the hermitage of São Gens, and at the time it was even a hermitage because that place was outside the then existing village, and as for the choice of that place, it is not excluded that it was an ancient place of pagan worship, given its characteristics. Given the religionIt is strange to say the least that such an ancient devotion to a saint has been completely abandoned, that they have let their hermitage fall into ruins and then recovered it but with another patron saint. I could not find an explanation, and as if that were not enough, and to complete the "anathema" to which the people of Lorigu condemned the saint, they also changed his name from Saint Gens to Saint Ginese, the name of a saint who never existed. But the detail of the name change can be easily explained by the passage of centuries, the isolation and the "linguistic adaptation" that tends to lean towards the easier forms, and Loriga is also known for her "linguistic singularities" and the massive use of nicknames that can be affectionate or derogatory.
It is also true that the Visigoths built a temple dedicated to Our Lady in the exact place where the Mother Church now stands, being a small church whose dimensions would not be far from those of the hermitage of Our Lady of Guia. It is also known that in the Visigothic era Loriga had the status of parish, which depended on the bishop of Egitania (now Idanha a Velha), and that the parish covered an area larger than that occupied by the old municipality of Loricense in its major phase, which was reached in the mid-nineteenth century. localities around Loriga, which still exist and of which only two have reached the status of parish. In fact, this was one of the many pleasant surprises I had, my historical research was a true "joy of discoveries" despite the enormous personal and material costs, and the more I researched the more I realized the antiquity and historical importance of Loriga.
In these wanderings of historical research, I have long learned that even some smaller villages that some consider insignificant can in fact hide an ancient history. On the other hand, there are localities that today have some importance and whose natives strive to invent a long past that never existed. Cabeça, for example, belonged to the parish of Loriga since the sixth century and on May 12, 1806 had the detachment of the parish of Loriga. Therefore, the so-called "couples" referred to in the "parchments", whose inhabitants went to the church of Lorica to hear mass, already have a long history that has never been recorded, and unfortunately one of these localities was recently and unjustly amputated from its status as a parish. And I say church of Lorica because the use of the current version of the Roman name, that is, Loriga, was only definitively consolidated in the first half of the thirteenth century, until that time it was referred to as Lorica, which is how it appears in older documents. In fact, the inquiries of King Afonso III are one of the first documents in which the name of this town appears as Loriga, before it always appeared as Lorica.
At the beginning of nationality, the consolidation, administration of the territory and the necessary settlement of populations implied the attribution of charters but also the creation of conditions for the practice of worship, and it is therefore frequent throughout history the construction of churches by royal initiative. And in this regard, the kings ordered the construction of churches in villages that were already the seat of municipalities or in villages that would be elevated to that condition, all to help fix the populations, and other measures were taken in this direction, and for example many castles were also made for this purpose. The detail to consider is that the status of municipality always went hand in hand with the status of parish, so the localities that had churches and were parishes were also county seats, and the importance of the fact would be greater if the church was built by the king.
It is known that the Church of Loriga was built by King D. Sancho II on top of the construction of the aforementioned small Visigothic temple from which the stone was used where the date of construction was engraved, the year 1233. Thus, this stone placed above one of the side doors facing the churchyard, in the current church, confirms its long existence, corresponding to the date of the decision to build it. The royal decision in this regard is also due to the fact that Loriga belonged to the Vicariate of the Royal Padroado (whose Patroness was Santa Maria Maior) and to the assets of the crown. The Church was immediately dedicated to Santa Maria Maior, an patron saint that remains, being a Romanesque temple whose design and main façade reminded the Old Cathedral of Coimbra, although obviously without the same monumentality. The church had three naves and the dimensions were close to the current ones, but beyond that the current church has nothing to do with the old one and what we see there is the result of several reconstructions and changes, the most radical of which were a consequence of the earthquake of 1755 that practically devastated the church.
Many people have wondered about the serious consequences of the 1755 earthquake in Loriga, and so here are some explanations. First of all, Loriga is located in a geologically sensitive place, at a transition site between two different rock blocks, on one side granite and on the other side schist, rocks with very different densities, in practice it is almost as if it were on top of a tectonic fault, which is enough to cause great agitation in the event of an earthquake. In addition, and to make matters worse, the hill between streams is not very solid because it was created with deposits dragged by the ancient glacier that tore through the Loriga Valley, and that is why the consequences of the earthquake were so serious in the town of Loriga, much more than in nearby towns. It should be noted that the damage was not limited to the Mother Church and the earthquake, in addition to the damage caused to many houses, caused the collapse of one of the walls of the parish residence and opened cracks in the robust City Hall building, built in the thirteenth century, and whose walls on the ground floor where the jail operated, had a thickness of almost two meters. The people of Lorigu had to deal with all the damage and did not receive any outside help, despite the Marquis of Pombal himself having been informed of the serious situation. Fortunately there were not, or at least there are no records of deaths or serious injuries in the village.
After the earthquake that caused practically complete ruin, the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style, but other changes can be highlighted, some of which had nothing to do with this reconstruction. For example, two chapels were added, one on each side of the chancel, one of which was later transformed into a sacristy chapel and finally into a sacristy only, and next to it another chapel was later added. The staircase and the exterior door that give access to the choir also did not exist and access to the bells was perfecto by the interior of the church, and these last changes were made as a consequence of the earthquake. Over time, changes and restorations were made, sometimes disastrously, especially in the twentieth century, by those who had no sensitivity to the preservation of heritage and therefore the current church, although beautiful, is not as beautiful nor as valuable as it would be without these bad interventions. In the century following the earthquake, in September 1882, an earthquake was again felt in the center of the country, and therefore also very much felt in Loriga, which seemed, at first, not to be very serious. But the consequences would come later, when everyone seemed to have already forgotten. The following November, and when mass was celebrated, the main beam of the church cracked, and the temple was immediately vacated and some images and other items were removed. Only at the end of the day did the roof collapse almost completely, leaving only the tower and the chancel standing. Two years later, the reconstruction work of the church was completed, which, as had happened after the earthquake of 1755, was done by the local population, all united, and it was this last reconstruction that has reached the present times, although, as already mentioned, with some "restorations" that impoverished it.
Still on the subject of the old hermitages of Loriga, I inform you that the old chapel of Santo António was built in the fourteenth century, was rebuilt several times and unfortunately was demolished in the seventies of the twentieth century, being part of the long list of historical heritage destroyed in this village. It was a hermitage because when it was built next to the old Roman road, current section of Avenida Augusto Luís Mendes, it was hundreds of meters from the then existing village, as well as the old Visigothic hermitage of São Gens currently dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The demolition of this old temple was not necessary, it could have remained on the site with recovery works, with a stone wall around it and a staircase to access the entrance, with the surrounding area being leveled to be at the level of the rest of the avenue, as was done. In fact, someone presented this suggestion but the contempt for the historical heritage of Loriga spoke louder and they found the demolition simpler, and it is shameful that after so many years a new chapel has not been built to a saint who, contrary to what happened with Saint Gens, is still very venerated in Loriga, with the right to an annual festival.
Its original design was Romanesque in style and had a porch at the entrance, having served as the mother church of Loriga during the reconstruction of the church after the earthquake of 1755. It is noteworthy that until medieval times and inclusive, the main altars and/or chancels of the temples were always oriented towards the east, and this is noticeable in the oldest temples of Loriga, as was the case of this old hermitage of Santo António, as is the case of the Mother Church (thirteenth century), and the even older Visigothic hermitage of São Gens, currently dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Loriga@site2002
The Image of Nossa Senhora da Guia, patron saint of Loriga's emigrants, displays the star, one of the greatest symbols of this village and which is also why it is on the coat of arms of Loriga. The patron saint of Loriga and of the people of Loriga is Santa Maria Maior, and for this reason she is the patron saint of the mother church and of the parish, and it was already like this in the thirteenth century. One of the many lies spread by the lying ignorant idiots (misleading others) is that according to which the patron saint of Loriga and of the people of Loriga and of the people of Loriga is Our Lady of Guia, and this lie was even placed in the article about Loriga on Wikipedia when the article was vandalized (article that was created by the historian António Conde).
Faith is not a matter of fashions, and saints, devotions, and invocations are not disposable things that are exchanged, replaced, despised, and forgotten on a whim. For more than eight hundred years, the patron saint of Loriga and the people of Loriga has been Santa Maria Maior, and this fact is a matter of faith, it is a matter of devotion, it is a matter of truth, it is a matter of history and it is a matter of respect for the historical identity of Loriga!
A little more time and this type of people get a nickname for Santa Maria Maior, make the image disappear and change the patron saint of the parish and the mother church. In a few years or centuries someone remembers to introduce a new devotion in Loriga, they make a new chapel, they start to have some parties in honor of this new devotion and then they make another exchange, and perhaps the destiny will be contempt, oblivion and a nickname, just as these people did to São Gens!
In a pharisaical way this type of people despises the foundations of the faith and acts as such, but they show off at religious events and even use the parish priest so that everyone can see them doing everything to use the faith to manipulate and instrumentalize the people of Lorigu for the benefit of their interests and petty personal motivations, and even the shameful issue of heraldry was used for this purpose] (see this shame in video here! * http://vimeo.com/856864459 ), as an example, see the shameful Coat of Arms of Vila de Cruz, from 2002 (rejected by the people of Loriguenses, as well as the even more shameful Coat of Arms of Vila de Carreto, from 2018, and if anyone has doubts, hold a referendum here, see this shame in PDF file * http://historyofloriga.files.wordpress.com/2026/02/historia-concisa-do-brasao-de-loriga.pdf ) and the Christmas postcard from 2024.
It is this kind of self-righteous and hypocritical people who, with their evil deeds and their bad example, cause others to lose their faith, and it is this type of people who drive people away from churches and from all religious practices. In fact, the ignorant people who unfortunately were born in this beautiful and historic village, are experts in mistreating the image of this village and the image of their countrymen, and in putting everything into question; They question the patron saint of Loriga and the people of Loriga and the patron saint of the parish and the Mother Church, the antiquity of Loriga (including its status as a village and its textile industry), its history, its name and the way it is pronounced (the BURROS think it is pronounced Luriga), its heritage, the place where the village was founded, its gentile, its heraldry, the date of the foundation of the Lorigu institutions, etc.

Parishes of the Loriga Region [area of the former Municipality of Loriguense and Sandomil].
Alvoco da Serra
Alvoco da Serra is a Portuguese parish in the Loriga Region, with an area of 37.57 km² and 333 inhabitants (2021). Density: 8.86 inhabitants/km². The parish consists of five localities: Alvoco da Serra (seat of the parish), Outeiro da Vinha, Vasco Esteves de Baixo, Vasco Esteves de Cima and Aguincho. Alvoco da Serra received a charter from King Manuel I on February 17, 1514, the date on which it ceased to belong to the municipality of Loriga. It was a town and county seat between this date and 1828, the year in which the county was extinguished. In 1801, it had 667 inhabitants. Between 1828 and 1855 it belonged again to the municipality of Loriga, after which it became part of the municipality of Seia. The parish of Alvoco da Serra has always been dependent on the parish of Loriga even during the time when Alvoco was the county seat.
Head
Cabeça is a Portuguese parish in the Loriga Region, with an area of 8.55 km² and 189 inhabitants (2021). Density: 22.10 inhabitants/km². Cabeça belonged to the municipality (from 1136 to 1855), to the parish (from the sixth century to 1806) and to the parish of Loriga (until 1800), and for many years it was known as São Romão do Casal da Cabeça.
It was elevated to a parish by charter of King João VI on January 13, 1800. On May 12, 1806, the parish of Loriga was detached. Its population lives largely from agriculture and pastoralism.
António de Almeida Santos, minister in several Governments, President of the Assembly of the Republic, President of the Socialist Party, son of a Vidense and a Loricense, was born in Cabeça, at a time when his mother taught at the local primary school.
The millennial connection between Cabeça and Loriga is also affective, helped by the geographical proximity and the fact that Loriga has always been its provider of goods and services. This reality was despised during the caricatured administrative reform in 2013 in which many parishes with dubious aggregation criteria were extinguished. The aggregation solution used for the extinction of the parish of Cabeça was based on false arguments, which were therefore even the target of ridicule in the region where almost everyone has the notion of what was behind the aggregation solution that was decided even against the will of the Cabecenses. A real scandal in an administrative reform carried out in the 21st century, with a supposedly democratic regime in force, in which politicians acted as if they were in the 19th century or even in even more retrograde times, and the two largest parties, PS and PSD, were very badly seen in this shameful process, and both Loriguenses and Cabecenses "felt that they were stabbed in the back".
Sazes da Beira
Sazes da Beira is a Portuguese parish in the Loriga Region, with an area of 6.39 km² and 245 inhabitants (2021). Density: 38.34 inhabitants/km². The first definitive settlement took place in the fifteenth century, in the place called "Sazes Velho". In 1527 the village had 65 people. However, and continuing to search for proximity to the water, it led to the foundation of what is now the village of Sazes da Beira itself.
The date of the foundation of its parish is not known, but it is known that it was at the beginning of the eighteenth century.
Since its foundation, Sazes has always belonged to the municipality of Sandomil until its extinction in 1836, when it became part of the municipality of Loriga. In the midst of all the administrative reshuffles suffered (in which Sandomil was about to belong to the municipality of Loriga), the parish of Sazes (corresponding to the entire territory of its parish) belonged to the municipality of Loriga until 1855, when it was extinguished.
Teixeira
Teixeira is a Portuguese parish in the Loriga Region, with an area of 12.88 km² and 146 inhabitants (2021). Density: 1 1.33 inhabitants/km². It belonged to the municipality of Loriga until 1514, when Alvoco da Serra received a charter from King Manuel I, then became part of the parish of Vide in the early seventeenth century.
Valezim
Valezim is a Portuguese parish in the Loriga Region, with an area of 10.94 km², 242 inhabitants (2021) and a population density of 22.12 inhabitants/km². The most accepted hypothesis is that the name comes from vallecinus (Latin word for small valley).
There is a legend about the origin of the name of this village, which makes no sense, but like many other legends it originated from real historical facts. According to this legend, the Moors were expelled from Loriga and when they arrived at the place they exclaimed: in this valley yes! In fact, at some point the Moors were expelled from Loriga, and it is even possible that they founded the village, but they certainly did not speak Portuguese.
Valezim is one of the many "historical villages" that unfortunately have never been recognized as such, the same happened with Cabeça, Alvoco and Sandomil, and like many other historical localities, and as a result of the incompetence of the mayors, its heraldry does not honor its parchments. This same incompetence of the mayors in relation to heraldry was also verified in Loriga, the difference is that the people of Loriga did not settle for a ridiculous coat of arms and forced the mayors to correct the crap they wanted to do.
The main economic activities of the population are linked to agriculture and pastoralism, housing tourism and civil construction. Its first charter was granted in 1201 by King John of Foyle. In 1514 it was renovated by King Manuel I, and became a municipality formed only by the parish of the headquarters. Between 1836 and 1855 it belonged to the municipality of Loriga. On that date he was integrated into the municipality of Seia, where he belongs.
Its greatest festivity is in honor of Our Lady of Health, held annually on the first Sunday of September.
See
Vide is a Portuguese parish in the Loriga Region, with an area of 51.25 km² and 380 inhabitants (2021), with a population density of 7.41 inhabitants/km². It is located in the central area of the country, in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, at a distance of 25 km from the Tower.
The parish encompasses the following small annexed villages: Abitureira, Baiol, Balocas, Baloquinhas, Barreira, Barriosa, Barroco da Malhada, Borracheiras, Carvalhinho, Casal do Rei, Casas Figueiras, Cide, Chão Cimeiro, Coucedeira, Costeiras, Fontes do Cide, Foz da Rigueira, Foz do Vale, Frádigas, Gondufo, Lamigueiras, Malhada das Silhas, Monteiros, Muro, Obra, Outeiro, Ribeira, Rodeado, Sarnadinha, Silvadal and Vale do Cide.
In Vide was born the father of António de Almeida Santos, who was a minister in several Governments, was President of the Assembly of the Republic and President of the Socialist Party. Son of a Loricense, he was born in Cabeça, at a time when his mother taught at the local primary school.
Vide has always belonged to the municipality of Loriga and at the beginning of the seventeenth century it gained some autonomy with the promotion to parish but continuing to depend on Loriga and without ever having received a charter and consequently never had the category of village, a fact that is reflected in its coat of arms that has only three towers in its mural crown (the old villages, like the modern ones, they are entitled to a coat of arms with a mural crown of four towers).
This ambiguous situation lasted until the beginning of the nineteenth century (1834), and at that time it was fully reintegrated into the municipality of Loriguense until 1855, the year in which it was integrated into the municipality of Seia. In 1801 it consisted only of the headquarters and had 750 inhabitants.
Latest studies, carried out in 2002, confirm that the settlement of the Loriga Valley, at the end of which Vide is located, dates back to the end of the Upper Palaeolithic. Between the areas of Entre-águas and Ferraduras, in this parish, there are some rock cores that have several rock inscriptions, the largest discovered so far, which were the object of study by the Portuguese Association for Archaeological Research, and which, according to the general features presented, belong to the Bronze Age. However, there are other vestiges of that time, which extend along the Loriga Valley, from Vide to the vicinity of the village of Loriga.
The village of Vide has several accesses, the main ones being the EN 230, which comes from Oliveira do Hospital and junction with the EN231, and the EN 238, at Portela de Loriga, intersection with the EN 231 that joins Loriga to Seia.
Sandomil
Sandomil is a Portuguese parish in the Loriga Region with an area of 13.22 km²[1] and 745 inhabitants (2021 census), thus having a population density of 56.4 inhabitants/km².
It was a town and county seat since the thirteenth century, having received a charter from D. Afonso III as well as Loriga. The municipality consisted of a parish and Sazes, and had, in 1801, 1726 inhabitants. After the administrative reforms of 1836, the parishes of São Gião, Folhadosa, Torrozelo and Vila Cova were annexed to Coelheira. In 1849, it had 4427 inhabitants. The Decree of October 24, 1855 extinguished the municipality, transferring its territory to the (current municipality) of Seia.
Sandomil appears under the name of Sandimir in documents from the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries, including in the Inquiries of D. Afonso III, later passing to Sandomil. The Lands of Sandimir, as well as the Lands of Lorica (Lands of Loriga, which included the area currently belonging to the parishes of Cabeça, Alvoco da Serra, Vide and Teixeira), were donated by D. Afonso Henriques to D. João Viegas, known by the nickname of João Rânia.
The parish is known as "Princesa do Alva" due to the floodplains of fertile land and the use of the waters of the Alva River, and small family farming is still an important way of life. When Loriga was a progressive industrial town, it was common for farmers from Sandomil to travel to Loriga to sell their agricultural products at the local market. Especially on Sundays there was a kind of pilgrimage between Sandomil and Loriga in which the old Roman road between Portela de Loriga and the village was widely used, this reality created even more affective bonds that still last between the two locations.

Zeca Maria's henchmen and lackeys think that they and their owner are the owners of Loriga, and they think, affirm, say and write that the people of Loriga, whether they like it or not, are obliged to accept the shit they did and did, as is the case of the coat of arms of the village of Carreto!

Zeca Maria's henchmen and lackeys think that they and their owner are the owners of Loriga, and they think, affirm, say and write that the people of Loriga, whether they like it or not, are obliged to accept the shit they did and did, as is the case of the coat of arms of the village of Carreto!
